Excelerate Launch New Demonstration Vehicle enabling Zero Gap Connectivity On-The-Move
Excelerate have recently launched a new demonstration vehicle in the shape of a 4 x 4 Ford Ranger. This new connected vehicle is a first-of-its-kind in the UK and provides superior ‘always on’ connectivity.
The integrated Kymeta satellite terminal is slim and lightweight and can be integrated on-board almost any vehicle delivering guaranteed access to data, video and voice regardless of location, including when terrestrial networks are down or suffering disruption. The Kymeta satellite terminal does not require mechanical components to steer towards a satellite enabling an always-connected experience whether stationary or driving.
The vehicle has also been equipped with Excelerate’s secure and private cellular service for enhanced communications capability as well as an ExCell mobile data extender for increased range and performance of any mobile network. As responders adopt a more digital way of working and with a need for devices that can be used on the move, this blend of cellular and satellite ensures all operational assets are connected and fit for purpose.
Excelerate’s Digital Dashboard Management Interface (DDMI) can be accessed on the external touchscreen or via an integrated ruggedised tablet. DDMI, combines all systems and applications in to one easy-to-use interface and is currently being utilised by the majority of our customer base.
For several months, Excelerate’s R&D team have performed extensive speed and reliability tests along motorways up and down the UK as well as in remote locations including the Brecon Beacons where little to no coverage exists. In September 2018, the vehicle was deployed at the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation (UKRO) Challenge in Cardiff Bay. This event allowed Excelerate to test all integrated technologies on-board the connected vehicle in a real-world situation, where due to a surge in visitors to the area streaming and uploading content to social media, terrestrial networks were stretched beyond the usual capacity.
The fluctuating availability of terrestrial networks poses a serious challenge for responders trying to access & share reliable content and can often become unusable in situations when it matters most. We have carried out extensive trials of our demonstration vehicle and were achieving the same level of functionality while on the move at motorway speeds, in a crowded space during an event in Cardiff and in a remote rural location. With a hybrid approach to connectivity on-board vehicles, through the use of both cellular and satellite networks, responders can now experience seamless communications on-the-move whatever their environment
